Islamic Home Decor Ideas
In the year 711 begins the Muslim invasion, inaugurating a time of great changes in all areas: art, architecture, customs, etc. With the name of Al-Andalus, which means in Arabic land of vandals, one remembers a stage of the history of Spain which concluded with the fall of the Kingdom of Granada in the year 1492.
Al-Andalus was composed of flourishing cities, with an important commercial and cultural activity, which gradually changed a way of understanding life. This is reflected in the numerous monuments and archaeological remains that speak to us of a time when the world of Islam extended to the west. Today, we continue to use their decorative arts to give that different and Moorish atmosphere that both likes and attracts.
Techniques and materials at the service of decoration
Monuments, houses, palaces and other Islamic constructions are characterized by their embellishment and adornment rather than the architecture that supports them, which has made this current a way of life rather than a simple style.
One of the most used materials is mud, used in all areas that envelops this expression. It is an easy to model and handle element, allowing artists to design thousands of shapes. We also distinguish in most of the decoration, the use of the valuable tile work and ceramics, which uses the green and blue tones in many compositions. A very important legacy that still remains today.
Islam, unconditional love to Allah
The Islamic religion manifests itself through a cult without images and a total submission to its one God: Allah. This fact has largely influenced Muslim art, something that we observe at first sight in buildings, both religious and civil. The Islamic ritual gave rise to two constructive typologies of religious character: the mosque, enclosure where the community gathers to pray, characterized as a diaphanous space, and the school or “madrasa”, a construction dedicated to the teaching of the Quran.
The floral motifs are widely used in all creations, since their purpose is to avoid the development of true forms of reality, something that the Islamic religion considers as an affront to God. Geometry is very important in Arabic art. Through it they pretend to represent the indivisibility of God. In addition, the Arabic writing is notable for its great transcendence, since it has a double function: ornamental and oceanographic.
The inscriptions come to be what for the Catholics are the carvings of the churches; I mean, they’re their own religious icons. The content of the same is varied: verses of the Quran, pious messages, poetic texts, etc. Just as the stylization of the shapes is carried out, the writing is used not to represent sacred scenes.
Water and symmetry
It is essential to use water, so it is common to see fountains in the courtyards of houses, mosques and palaces as in the Alhambra in Granada or the mosque of Cordoba. It is also common to contemplate an impressive combination of plants, which can even hide a construction or elements of this. Fountains and ponds, together with an impressive vegetation, are a good option if you have a large garden. The passing of water along with the delicious smells of almonds and orange trees will create an atmosphere of peace.
This movement is full of calligraphic and geometric elements, but also of floral motifs of great beauty and achieved stylization that manage to transport to a harmonious world. Repetition coupled with symmetry, achieves a balance and unity effect. The decorated surfaces extend throughout the construction and sometimes even hide it. This fact is known as horror vacuity and is characterized by the fear of emptiness, so that the Arab decoration is unfolded generously by the building to not leave a single space free.
If we choose to move this style to our home, we will give a different and special air to every nook and cranny. Leather lamps, wrought lanterns, red and pink billowing fabrics, wool or cotton rugs with geometric drawings, forging tables and chairs, tiles, plaster moldings, pointed arches or earthenware vessels will create that Moorish spiritual environment that seek.
